Drawn in pencil and Chinese white on olive-toned paper, this sheet shows Brigadier General David Allen Russell's brigade of the 1st Division, 6th Army Corps, crossing the Rappahannock River on pontoon boats to attack Confederate rifle pits on the far bank. The record dates it to April 1863, weeks before the Battle of Chancellorsville, when the Union army was maneuvering along this river near Fredericksburg. The field sketch captures the cramped, improvised nature of a pontoon crossing under threat of fire, and its use of opaque white highlights on a dark ground gives the water and boats a stark, quick immediacy.
