Few pictures on this board show the Norfolk Broads at work, and this platinum print from 1886 does so with unusual clarity. It shows a boat hauling a load of cut hay across the water, the kind of harvest that kept the marsh villages busy each summer. The image was made by P.H. Emerson and T.F. Goodall for their book "Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads," published in London, where it appears as plate 21. Emerson's work of this period sought to record rural labor with naturalistic care rather than posed sentiment, and the print is worth studying for that reason.
