The seawall and boulevard at Galveston, Texas, make this view stand apart from the usual beach scenes on the board, since the long, straight roadway runs right up against the Gulf. Galveston had already faced a devastating hurricane in 1900, which killed thousands and led the city to raise its grade and build a massive seawall along the shoreline. By 1910 that wall and the Seawall Boulevard beside it had turned the island's edge into a promenade for visitors and residents, a change worth noticing when comparing this scene with earlier photographs of the coast.
