Redondo Beach, California, in 1910 was a seaside town of a few thousand people on the South Bay, shaped by the railroad and the Pacific Electric interurban line that Henry Huntington had extended into town. Its wharf and bathing beach drew Los Angeles-area day-trippers, and the town's economy leaned on tourism, fishing, and light trade through its landing. The town had lost its bid to become the region's deep-water port when Congress chose San Pedro in 1899, a decision that still shaped local expectations about growth. Residents who had watched the old Redondo Hotel burn in 1907 were rebuilding a resort identity around the beach and pier. This view of the shoreline shows a community still deciding whether it would be a harbor town or a holiday town.
