Redondo Beach, California, in 1909 was a seaside town on Santa Monica Bay that had grown up around its harbor, wharf, and the beach resort trade that drew visitors from Los Angeles. The town had been incorporated in 1892, and by the 1900s the electric interurban lines of the Pacific Electric Railway made the trip from the city to the shore a short outing for day-trippers and summer residents. Fishing boats worked from the harbor, and the big hotel near the water, which had opened in the early 1890s, was a landmark that residents and visitors alike associated with the place. Life in town centered on the beach, the pier and wharf, and the steady stream of excursion crowds that gave the community its character during these years.
