San Francisco in 1909 was still rebuilding three years after the 1906 earthquake and fire, with new brick and steel buildings rising over the burned districts south of Market Street and in the Western Addition. The city's population was climbing back toward 400,000, and builders were raising hotels, flats, and stores faster than the old streets could handle. Chinatown was rebuilt on its old footprint, with merchants adding ornamental balconies and pagoda-style rooflines that began drawing visitors as a showpiece. The view captures a city eager to look whole again, even as residents argued over what the new skyline should be.
