In 1914, the fishing docks at the foot of Taylor Street and along North Beach were worked largely by Italian families who had settled there over the previous decades. Their boats fished the bay and the coast for crab and salmon, and the catch fed restaurants and markets across the city. Cable cars still climbed the steep grades of Powell Street and Nob Hill, carrying shoppers and clerks, while Chinatown's Grant Avenue drew sightseers to its shops and balconies. Much of this daily routine had resumed within a few years of the 1906 disaster, and residents measured recovery by whether the docks and streetcars were running again.
