San Francisco in 1914 was still rebuilding after the 1906 earthquake and fire, and the Panama-Pacific International Exposition was taking shape on reclaimed flatlands along the Marina to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal and the city's recovery. The fair, set to open in February 1915, was meant to draw on the port's Pacific trade and to show visitors from across the country a city that had come back stronger. Construction on the grounds was still a half-finished mix of scaffolding, mud, and plaster, with large exhibit palaces rising around a central court. Residents of the period would have known the fair as a point of civic pride in a city of roughly 400,000 people, and as proof that San Francisco had recovered from its disaster.
