San Francisco in 1914 was a city still recovering its footing and looking ahead to a grand showcase. The earthquake and fire of 1906 had leveled much of the downtown core, and by the mid-1910s rebuilding had produced new office blocks, hotels, and city hall, though many neighborhoods remained a patchwork of wood-frame houses on steep hills. The port was a central engine of the local economy, with shipping, shipbuilding, canneries, and rail freight tying the bay to the wider West. Preparations for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, set to open in 1915 on reclaimed land at the Presidio edge, dominated civic talk that year. Residents would have known their city as the gateway to the Pacific, a place proud of its recovery and eager to prove it.
