San Francisco in early May 1906 was still reeling from the earthquake of April 18 and the fires that followed, which burned for several days and destroyed much of the downtown business district, the waterfront and many residential blocks. Tens of thousands of residents lost their homes, and many camped in parks and open lots while relief committees and Army troops handled food, tents and water. The city had long been a major Pacific port, with shipping, rail freight and manufacturing driving its economy, and residents measured the disaster against that prosperity. By May, debris clearing and talk of rebuilding had begun, and the wrecked streets shown here marked the start of a reconstruction that would take years.
