San Francisco in 1906 was a city of roughly 400,000 people, living off the bay's shipping, its wharves, and the warehouses and factories that handled goods moving across the Pacific. On the morning of April 18, an earthquake struck along the San Andreas fault, and fires that followed burned much of the downtown and nearby districts for days. Tens of thousands of residents lost their homes, and many spent weeks in tent camps in parks and open lots while relief committees handed out food and water. Within months, property owners and city officials were clearing rubble and arguing over how to rebuild, with businessmen eager to restore the port's trade. The disaster left a lasting lesson about the ground beneath the city.
