San Francisco in April 1906 was a busy Pacific port of roughly 400,000 people, with its wharves, ferries, and warehouses tied to shipping and the city's growing commerce. At about 5:12 on the morning of April 18, a strong earthquake struck, and broken gas mains and overturned stoves set off fires that burned for three days. Firefighters, short of water after the mains failed, often dynamited buildings to create firebreaks, and the flames consumed much of the downtown and residential districts. Several thousand people died or were left homeless, and the disaster reshaped the city's skyline. Within a few years, San Francisco was rebuilding, and the ruined city became known around the world for its endurance.
