San Francisco in 1906 was a port city of roughly 400,000 people, with an economy built on shipping, warehouses, and the rail lines that connected it to the rest of California. At about 5:12 on the morning of April 18, a powerful earthquake struck, and broken gas mains and overturned stoves set off fires that burned for several days. Much of the downtown and the neighborhoods north and east of Market Street were destroyed, and thousands of residents were left homeless in camps set up in parks and open ground. Crews used dynamite to cut firebreaks, while the army helped keep order as officials turned to clearing debris and planning the rebuilding. Residents would long measure their city by that spring, when insurance disputes and new building codes shaped the rebuilding.
