San Francisco in the spring of 1906 was still a city of wood-frame houses and brick commercial blocks packed onto steep hills, and this view shows how little of its downtown remained after the fires that followed the April 18 earthquake. Stone and brick walls stood as hollow shells above heaps of rubble, while City Hall's great dome had collapsed. The United States Mint at Fifth and Mission streets survived, and it became one of the few intact civic buildings that residents pointed to in the weeks afterward. Chinatown, a dense district of tenements and shops, was largely destroyed, and its loss pushed many of its residents into temporary camps. People who lived through it spoke of the city as divided between what burned and what had been spared.
