San Francisco in April 1906 was a busy Pacific port of about 400,000 people, with wharves and warehouses handling grain, lumber, and goods shipped in by rail and sea. Shortly after 5 a.m. on April 18, an earthquake shook the city, and fires broke out in many districts within hours. Broken water mains left firefighters with almost nothing to pump, so crews used dynamite to cut firebreaks, but the flames burned for three days through downtown and many neighborhoods. Tens of thousands of residents lost their homes, and rebuilding began almost at once as city leaders and merchants pressed to restore commerce. This view shows the smoke and ruin that people in the city would remember for a generation as the disaster that defined its recent past.
