San Francisco in 1910 was four years past the earthquake and fire of April 1906, and the blocks around Union Square had been rebuilt quickly as the city's main shopping and hotel district. Department stores, specialty shops, and hotels lined Geary, Post, and Powell streets, and cable cars carried shoppers and office workers up and down the hills. The Dewey Monument, dedicated in 1903 to Admiral George Dewey's victory at Manila Bay in 1898, stood at the square's center and reminded residents of the city's ties to the Pacific and the Navy. The city's population had grown to roughly 400,000 by the 1910 census, and its port, financial houses, and rebuilt commercial core made it the dominant urban center on the West Coast.
