San Francisco in 1915 was still rebuilding from the April 1906 earthquake and fire, and the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, which opened that February, was meant to show the world that the city had recovered. The fair spread across reclaimed tidelands on the northern waterfront between the Presidio and the Marina, with white and pastel palaces built largely of temporary materials. Bernard Maybeck's Palace of Fine Arts stood among them, and the grounds were lit at night in a way that drew visitors from across the country. The exposition marked the Panama Canal's opening to shipping the previous summer, tying the city's port future to the new sea route. Attendance reached close to nineteen million before the gates closed in December.
