San Francisco in 1877 was a city where labor politics were hardening. That summer, as railroad strikes spread across the eastern states, unemployed workers and teamsters gathered on a vacant lot near city hall, where Denis Kearney, an Irish-born drayman, denounced the railroad monopolies and the Chinese laborers he said undercut wages. The crowds grew large, and the rallies fed a new Workingmen's Party that pressed for limits on Chinese immigration. Meanwhile, wealthy merchants and bankers were building large houses on Nob Hill, reached by cable cars that climbed its steep grades. The view shows a port prospering through its shipping and mills, even as many of its wage earners felt left behind.
