San Jose in 1909 was a county seat of roughly 25,000 to 30,000 residents, and the Santa Clara Valley's orchards still set the town's economic pace. Canneries, packing houses, and drying yards handled the fruit harvest, and the surrounding farms supplied them. Electric streetcar and interurban lines were spreading through the valley by then, giving commuters, shoppers, and produce shippers a faster alternative to horse-drawn wagons on dusty roads. Residents knew their town as the home of the State Normal School and of a prosperous farm trade, and the downtown blocks near the old Plaza were where merchants, orchardists, and city officials met each day.
