San Jose in 1906 was a valley city of about 20,000 people, still living by the orchard calendar of the Santa Clara Valley. Apricot, prune, and cherry harvests drew crews into the packing houses and drying yards each summer, and the freight yards and depots moved the fruit out by rail. The State Normal School, the teacher training college that had long set the town apart from its farm neighbors, kept students and boarding houses busy on the city's streets. On April 18, 1906, the great earthquake that struck San Francisco also shook San Jose, toppling chimneys and damaging brick business blocks, and residents spent the following weeks repairing what the shaking had broken.
