San Bernardino, California, in 1909 was a railroad and citrus town at the foot of the San Bernardino Mountains in the Inland Empire. Orange groves spread across the valley floor, and packing houses and shipping sheds turned the crop into one of the region's main sources of income. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway's shops and yards gave the city a large body of skilled machinists and rail workers, tying its fortunes to the trains that carried fruit and passengers west to the coast and east across the desert. Residents of the time knew the city as a valley seat of commerce and a gateway to the mountains, where summer visitors came for cooler air and the snowy peaks.
