San Diego in 1915 was a city of roughly 40,000 people, still finding its footing after the Panama-California Exposition opened in Balboa Park that year to mark the completion of the Panama Canal. The fair brought Spanish Colonial Revival architecture and a wave of visitors who would help shape the city's identity as a destination. Its economy rested on the harbor, the fishing fleet, citrus and agriculture in the surrounding valleys, and the Santa Fe and San Diego and Arizona railroads that linked it to the rest of the country. Many residents would have measured their city by its bayfront growth and the promise of the exposition, which drew crowds through the year and reshaped the downtown skyline and public life.
