San Fernando Mission, in the San Fernando Valley north of Los Angeles, was founded in 1797 and had been secularized in the 1830s, so by 1901 it stood as a relic of the Franciscan era rather than a working religious community. The valley around it was still largely farmland, with grain, orchards, and vineyards on land that had once belonged to the mission's herds and fields. Railroad lines and growing Los Angeles had begun to draw settlers into the area, and the mission was becoming a point of local pride and a destination for visitors interested in the state's Spanish past. Many residents in 1901 would have known it as a quiet landmark beside the valley's farms and small towns.
