San Diego in 1908 was a city of roughly 40,000 people, still small and building its identity around its harbor, its mild climate, and the Spanish mission history that boosters were promoting heavily. The Santa Fe Railway had reached the city in 1885, linking it to the rest of the country and fueling a land and real estate boom that peaked around 1887 and then slowed. By 1908 the economy leaned on fishing, tuna canning, citrus and agriculture in the back country, and the navy's growing presence around San Diego Bay. Residents also knew the city for Balboa Park, where the 1915 exposition was then still in planning, and for the Coronado hotel across the bay. This panoramic view records a waterfront and downtown that were expanding quickly, though the city was still far from the metropolis it would become.
