San Juan Capistrano in 1907 was a small agricultural town in the Santa Ana Valley, where ranchers grew citrus, walnuts, grapes, and beans, and the railroad had brought it into closer contact with Los Angeles and San Diego. The mission, founded in 1776 by Junípero Serra, was then better known to visitors than to most local residents. Helen Hunt Jackson's novel *Ramona*, published in 1884, had drawn tourists to the old California missions, and San Juan Capistrano's ruined stone church, toppled by an earthquake in 1812, drew many of them. Its crumbling walls and sycamore-shaded grounds were already a point of pride, and the mission's long decline was still a subject of local concern.
