Oxnard, California, in 1909 was a young agricultural town in Ventura County, built only a decade earlier around the American Beet Sugar Company's factory, which had opened in 1898 and drew growers and workers into the Oxnard Plain. Sugar beets were the main crop, and lima beans and other row vegetables were expanding across the fields that surrounded the town's grid of streets. The Oxnard brothers' company had given the town its name, and the Southern Pacific line running along the coast carried beet sugar and produce out to market. Residents of the time would have known Oxnard as a company town where the sugar campaign set the rhythm of the year, with harvest and processing crowding the calendar each autumn.
