Mount Wilson, in the San Gabriel Mountains above Pasadena and Los Angeles, was known in 1910 for its mountain-top scientific station. The Carnegie Institution had backed a solar observatory there under George Ellery Hale, and its 60-inch reflecting telescope had been in operation since 1908, drawing astronomers and visitors up the steep trail from the valley. The mountain's slopes were also part of the wider Southern California appeal of cool summers and mountain views, a draw that had already brought the Mount Lowe Railway and its resort to nearby Echo Mountain. Residents below were proud of the observatory and of the scenery that made the climb worthwhile.
