Pyramid Peak, rising near 10,000 feet above the southwestern shore of Lake Tahoe, anchored the view of Desolation Valley in 1910. The land lay in the Sierra Nevada, where the Gold Rush of 1849 had reshaped the foothills of El Dorado and Placer counties a generation earlier. By 1910, those counties had turned much of their attention to timber, cattle, and the growing summer trade that drew visitors up to Lake Tahoe by rail and steamer. The high granite basins above the lake were still largely unsettled, reached mainly by pack trail and used by hunters, fishermen, and mountaineers. Clubs such as the Sierra Club, founded by John Muir in 1892, encouraged city residents from San Francisco and Sacramento to see these wild ridges firsthand.
