Venice, California, in 1910 was a young seaside resort that Abbot Kinney had founded in 1905, modeled on the Italian city and built around a network of canals in the low ground near Santa Monica Bay. Kinney promoted it as a cultural and recreational destination, and the canals, gondola rides, and an amusement pier drew visitors from Los Angeles by rail and electric streetcar. The town had been incorporated only in 1904, and its population was still small, though it was tied to the larger growth of Los Angeles, whose oil fields, citrus shipping, and expanding harbor at San Pedro shaped the region's economy. Residents and tourists in 1910 would have known Venice chiefly for its novelty architecture and its lively lakefront, a place that seemed to promise leisure as well as a new kind of Southern California living.
