Emerald Bay, on the southwest shore of Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada, was a summer destination in 1910 for visitors who came up from the Sacramento and San Francisco areas. Logging in the Tahoe Basin had cleared much of the slopes a generation earlier, and the lake's resorts and steamer landings depended on the tourist trade that followed. Its deep, narrow inlet with the small island at its mouth drew hotel guests, boaters, and photographers, and the bay's clear water and granite shores were already well known as scenic attractions. The land was then largely in private hands, and the bay would not become a protected state park until decades later, in 1953.
