Lake Bryanthus, California, appears in this 1911 panoramic photograph, though surviving records say little about the lake itself, so the state around it offers the clearest context. In 1911 California was in the middle of a political shift: Governor Hiram Johnson had taken office that January on a platform against railroad and corporate influence, and in October voters approved women's suffrage. The state's economy leaned on agriculture, fruit and irrigated farmland, and on the railroads that carried those crops to market. Many residents moved west during these years, and towns grew quickly around water projects, rail lines and orchards. Scenes like this one, of open water set against the land, would have been familiar to people who relied on lakes and reservoirs for irrigation, recreation and local pride.
