Kings River Canyon, in the Sierra Nevada east of Fresno, California, was still a remote gorge in 1911, cut by a river that drops steeply from the high country toward the San Joaquin Valley. Fresno, the valley's main city, depended on irrigated farming of grapes, raisins, and other fruit, and its growers looked to the mountains for the water that made that farming possible. Few roads reached the canyon, so most visitors arrived by horse or stagecoach, and lumbering and cattle grazing in the surrounding forests were the chief activities that drew people into the high country. Tourists who made the trip were often struck by the depth of the walls, which many Californians of the period considered among the wonders of the Sierra.
