Mendocino County in 1911 depended mainly on redwood lumber, with dairying, orchards, and farming close behind. Sawmills at Fort Bragg and Albion cut redwood and loaded it onto schooners for coastal shipping. Inland, the Ukiah and Anderson valleys grew apples, pears, and hay, and tanbark oak was cut and sold to tanneries. The Northwestern Pacific Railroad was building north through the county, and residents hoped it would tie these scattered towns more firmly to San Francisco markets. Ukiah, the county seat, served as the place where farmers, loggers, and merchants gathered for court sessions, county business, and local fairs.
