Mendocino Coast in 1911 was built around redwood lumber, with mills and shipping points strung along the rugged shoreline between the town of Mendocino and Fort Bragg. The coast had no sheltered deep harbor, so lumber was loaded onto schooners by chutes and lighters in open water, a slow and risky routine that shaped daily life for mill hands and sailors alike. At Fort Bragg, the Union Lumber Company ran some of the largest operations, and the railroad serving the town carried finished boards and supplies inland. Logging crews worked deeper into the coast range while cut-over hillsides spread outward from the mills. Residents would have known the region chiefly for its timber, its fishing boats, and its fog-bound bluffs.
