Mexicali and Calexico sat on opposite sides of the international line in 1911, both built on the irrigated farmland that the Colorado River had made possible in the Imperial and Mexicali valleys. Calexico, incorporated in 1908, was tied to the rest of California by the San Diego and Arizona Railway, and its farms shipped cotton, alfalfa, and vegetables north. Across the border, Mexicali was a young agricultural town, and in January 1911 it was seized by followers of Ricardo Flores Magón during the Mexican Revolution, a rising that spilled over into the border communities. Residents on both sides lived with the constant traffic of workers, merchants, and officials crossing between them.
