Lake George sits in the high eastern Sierra of Mono County, California, a region of cattle ranching, small mining camps, and summer pasture in 1911. Mono County's economy depended on mining and stockraising, and the mining boom of earlier decades had faded by then, so many residents relied on ranches, freight hauling, and seasonal work. The county seat, Bridgeport, was a small community tied to the rest of the state by rough roads and stagecoach routes, and distances made travel slow. Far to the south, Los Angeles interests were already buying water rights in the Owens Valley, a development that would soon change life across the eastern Sierra. Upland lakes like this one were known locally as places for fishing, camping, and grazing livestock through the summer months.
