Maricopa, California, in 1911 was a young oil town in Kern County, built around the Associated Oil Company's fields in the San Joaquin Valley. The discovery of oil in the Midway-Sunset area a few years earlier had turned sleepy farmland and cattle range into a boomtown of derricks, storage tanks, and pipelines, and Maricopa was laid out as a company-linked settlement to house workers and their families. Its main business was pumping and shipping crude, and the Southern Pacific's branch lines carried oil and supplies in and out of the valley. Residents would have known the town first for its oil wells and the rough, fast-growing labor of the fields, while the surrounding valley remained largely dry, hot, and sparsely settled.
