Mount Brewer and the Bubbs Creek country of the southern High Sierra looked much as they had for decades in 1911, when the peak was still reached mainly by packers, stockmen, and a small number of mountaineers. The mountain took its name from William Henry Brewer, a member of the California Geological Survey who mapped the range in the 1860s. In the years around 1911, the surrounding Sierra Forest Reserve was managed for timber, grazing, and watershed protection, and sheep and cattle were driven into the high meadows each summer. Few visitors from the San Joaquin Valley towns below ever saw the canyon, so the region was known mainly to herders, rangers, and the small outfits that guided hunters and sightseers into the backcountry.
