Lake Tahoe, straddling the California-Nevada line in 1908, was becoming a summer destination for city families from Sacramento and San Francisco, who reached the mountains by rail through Truckee and then took steamers and stagecoaches to the lakeshore resorts. The lumber mills and logging camps that had cut the surrounding forests in earlier decades were giving way to a economy built on tourism, cottages, and hotels. Visitors came for the cold, deep, clear water and the views of the Sierra Nevada, and many of them spoke of the lake as a retreat from the heat and dust of the valleys. The scene pictured here reflects that shift from working timberland to a place people traveled to see.
