Desolation Valley, in the granite country west of Lake Tahoe on the California side, was in 1910 a place few people reached except on foot, on horseback, or by the lake steamers and rail lines. The Tahoe basin had drawn lumber cutting and mining demand since the Comstock boom of the 1860s and 1870s, and by the 1900s summer cottages and camps were turning the shoreline toward tourism. The Lake Tahoe Railway had reached the north shore from Truckee around 1900, carrying campers and anglers to lakeside villages. The surrounding backcountry stayed lightly settled, with trails, meadows, and high lakes that visitors from the Sacramento Valley and the Bay Area came to see. This view shows that wild, thinly used country on the eve of the automobile era.
