Susie Lake in the Lake Tahoe country of California, photographed in 1910, sits in a region that had shifted over the previous few decades from logging and mining supply toward summer recreation. Timber cut in the Sierra Nevada had fed the silver mines of Nevada's Comstock Lode, and the lumber camps that followed left the basin with cleared slopes and new roads. By 1910, rail connections through Truckee had made the lake easier for visitors from Sacramento and the Bay Area to reach, and resorts and summer cabins were beginning to take root along the shore. Residents of the area would have known it as a place of work, with sawmills and freight still in use, and increasingly as a destination for vacationers seeking cool air and clear water.
