In 1910, the harbor at Catalina Bay on Santa Catalina Island, about 26 miles off the Los Angeles coast, was the center of a resort economy built on visitors. Steamers carried tourists from the mainland, and the small town at the water's edge lived on hotels, boat rentals, and the summer trade. The island was still under the control of the Banning family, who had developed its tourism and shipping, and the town was not yet incorporated as a municipality. Residents and visitors knew the place mainly as a seaside getaway where the water, the clear harbor, and the hillside homes drew Southern Californians in search of a holiday. Ownership would change within a decade, when William Wrigley Jr. acquired the island's controlling interest in 1919.
