Avalon, the principal town on Santa Catalina Island, sat in 1911 on a curve of shoreline about 22 miles off the coast of Southern California. The island had been developed as a resort, and the Banning family then controlled much of its land and its steamship connections to the mainland. Visitors arrived by steamer from Los Angeles and San Pedro to stay in hotels and enjoy boating and bathing along the bay, so the town's economy rested largely on the seasonal tourist trade. Its small year-round population served those summer and weekend crowds, many of whom were mainland residents escaping the heat and dust of a fast-growing Los Angeles.
