Busch Gardens in Pasadena, California, was a showpiece of the city's winter-resort era in 1911. St. Louis brewer Adolphus Busch, whose company made Budweiser, had developed the grounds as a private estate and display garden, drawing on the same tourist traffic that filled Pasadena's hotels each winter. By 1911 the city was known across the Midwest and East for its citrus groves, mild climate, and visiting health-seekers, and rail lines such as the Santa Fe and the Pacific Electric carried them in from Los Angeles and beyond. The gardens, with their imported and exotic plantings, were among the attractions that made Pasadena look like a place of leisure as much as a town of orchards and homes.
