Fort Bragg, on the Mendocino coast of northern California, owed its 1911 life to redwood lumber. The town grew up around the Union Lumber Company, whose mills and log yards lined the bluffs above the Noyo River, and the company was the largest employer in the area. Lumber left the coast by ship from the small harbor and by rail to inland markets, so mill whistles, loading docks, and the crews who worked them set the rhythm of daily life. The town had been named for a former army post on the bluffs, but by the early 1910s most residents knew it as a company town built on the timber trade. Its population was modest, and its fortunes rose and fell with demand for redwood in California's building boom.
