Caspar, a small lumber settlement on the Mendocino coast of northern California, looked to its harbor in 1911 as the link between the surrounding redwood forests and distant markets. Logs and sawn lumber from the local mill moved down to the water, where a wharf let schooners load cargo that the coastal roads could not carry overland. Work at the mill and in the woods set the pace of daily life, and families in the town depended on the company's payroll and the regular arrival of ships. Like many north coast communities of the period, Caspar was small and remote, and its residents knew it mainly as a place where timber left the coast by sea.
