Albion, a small lumber town at the mouth of the Albion River on the Mendocino County coast, lived largely by redwood in 1911. Its sawmill supplied most of the local work, and schooners called at the river mouth to carry cut lumber down the coast to San Francisco and other markets. Mill crews, their families, and farmers in the surrounding hills made up the community, and the rhythm of the day was set by the mill whistle and the tides. Across Mendocino County, timber determined who arrived, who stayed, and how the towns along the coast grew.
