Coalinga, in western Fresno County, was an oil town in 1909, and its streets and lots were shaped by the derricks that had risen across the western San Joaquin Valley foothills since the late 1880s. Oil drew workers, teamsters, and merchants to a dry, windy site where water and building materials had to be hauled in, so the community was still rough and unsettled, with frame buildings going up faster than services could follow. The railroad link that carried crude and supplies gave the town its connection to the wider state, and its economy rose and fell with the drilling. Residents of the period knew Coalinga first as an oil camp, a place measured by its production figures and its next well.
