Alhambra, California, in 1909 was a young city of orchards and small homes on the eastern edge of Los Angeles, in the San Gabriel Valley. It had incorporated in 1903, and its economy still rested largely on citrus and walnut groves that stretched across the valley floor. Electric interurban cars of the Pacific Electric Railway linked the town to downtown Los Angeles, so many residents lived in a quiet farming community while working or shopping in the big city. Growth was steady through the decade as subdivisions replaced orchards, and the town's identity was tied to its rail connections and its gardens. The panorama records a place still close to its agricultural roots, just before the suburban boom of the following years.
