Bakersfield in 1909 was still a county seat and railroad town, but its economy was tilting toward oil as well as the farms of the Kern River valley. Crude from the Kern River field had already brought drillers, teamsters, and supply merchants into town, and oil companies were pushing exploration into the hills to the west. Farming remained the steady base, with irrigated land producing grain, alfalfa, and fruit for shipment on the Southern Pacific line. Sheepherders, many of them Basque immigrants, drove flocks through the surrounding hills and brought a distinct presence to the local trade. This view shows the downtown streets and commercial buildings that handled that mix of money, supplies, and freight.
